Los Angeles Football Club announced Thursday that the club has exercised Omar Gaber’s contract option from Swiss side FC Basel, then transferred the defender to Pyramids FC of the Egyptian Premier League.

The move marks a homecoming for the Egyptian international, a member of his country’s squad at the 2018 World Cup in Russia this summer. He departs LAFC having made seven appearances (two starts) for the expansion side.

Gaber, 26, initially joined the club as a Discovery Player signed on a one-year loan from Basel using Targeted Allocation Money.

“Omar is a great player and person,” said LAFC executive VP of soccer operations and GM John Thorrington in a statement. “He made us aware of a family matter in Egypt and we were able to accommodate his move with a deal that makes sense financially for the club. We wish him all the best in the next step of his career.”
