LAFC 3, San Jose Earthquakes 1 | 2019 U.S. Open Cup Match Recap

Diego Rossi leveled 10 minutes before the break, Adama Diomande put his team in front on his final touch of the evening, and Carlos Vela completed the scoring in LAFC's 3-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes as they advanced to the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals.

With Tyler Miller away at the Concacaf Gold Cup, Pablo Sisniega made eight saves to help LAFC preserve a second win over San Jose this season, albeit this one far more difficult than a previous 5-0 league victory at Avaya Stadium back in late March.

By virtue of their Round of 16 victory, LAFC will host their quarterfinal against the Portland Timbers on July 10.

Vako scored early for the visitors at Banc of California Stadium to put the Quakes on top, but they would lose for just a third time in 13 matches across all competitions since that embarrassing home defeat to LAFC.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: LAFC are now three victories away from their first trophy in club history, but just maybe it's time to start thinking a lot bigger than that. With a six-point lead in the Supporters' Shield race, is the first-ever American domestic treble a realistic feat? (Toronto FC accomplished the first Canadian MLS version two years ago.)
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: The fourth official had already entered Diomande's number onto his electronic board when the striker took Rossi's throughball, rounded goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell and cooly slotted the ball into an open net to put his team on top 2-1. He would give way to Christian Ramirez just moments later.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Diego Rossi. With the Earthquakes doing a reasonably good job of containing Vela, the young Uruguayan provided the key moments necessary to turn a sluggish LAFC start into yet another victory.
