Inter Miami CF sign Edison Azcona, Ian Fray to Homegrown deals

Inter Miami CF have signed winger Edison Azcona and center back Ian Fray to Homegrown deals, the club announced Tuesday, giving the MLS club three academy products on first-team contracts after winger Felipe Valencia signed this past December.


Azcona and Fray both featured for Fort Lauderdale CF in USL League One during the 2020 season, impressing with Miami's reserve team. While he’s new to his role, chief soccer officer and sporting director Chris Henderson sees potential in both youngsters. 


“Ian and Edison are two players who were quickly brought to my attention during my short time here, and my impressions of them are very positive. It’s satisfying to be part of continuing their development and helping them reach a level where they can demonstrate readiness to compete and be valuable for the team on a consistent basis,” Henderson said in a release. “It’s important to develop from within, not only for the player and the club, but for the community too because they will always be part of the Inter Miami family wherever their career takes them in the future.” 

Azcona, 17, was named to the USL League One All-League Second Team this past season. He was also nominated as a finalist for the USL League One Young Player of the Year award. The Dominican Republic international started all 16 of Fort Lauderdale CF’s games and posted three goals and three assists. 


Fray, 18, was one of two Inter Miami academy players who signed with Fort Lauderdale CF after the 2019 season. He placed on the USL League One All-League Second Team for his standout performances this past year. The Florida native back also had the fourth-highest passing accuracy among defenders in the league (86.5 percent).
