Ever wondered which tracks your favorite players listen to before a game? Curious which concerts they’re going to? Then join Jon Langford, bassist in The Chevin, for his musical Q&As with Major League Soccer’s biggest stars.
This week’s DJ is US national team and Sporting Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi.
MLSsoccer.com: What was the first album you ever bought?
Zusi: Oh man! [Pauses.] I’m trying to think. It was either Matchbox 20 or Third Eye Blind. I don’t remember which, but it was one of those two.
MLSsoccer.com: What was the first concert you ever went to and what are your memories of it?
Zusi: My first show was either Incubus or OAR. I remember I accidently ended up in the mosh pit. I’ve avoided them ever since. The risk of injury is too high.
MLSsoccer.com: Who is your favorite band or artist of all time?
Zusi: I don’t know if I have one favorite. I really enjoy the Dave Matthews Band. I’ve been to a few of their concerts and they’re incredible. I went to see U2 last year and that was amazing. One of my favorites is the Red Hot Chili Peppers; they put on an incredible show. The energy they brought was amazing.
MLSsoccer.com: Is there a certain track you like to listen to before a big game to get pumped up?
Zusi: No. I change it up. I don’t listen to anything specific, just whatever I’m in the mood for. Right now, though, I like listening to “Little Black Submarines” by the Black Keys.
MLSsoccer.com: Which musicians, dead or alive, would you have over for a fantasy dinner party and why?
Zusi: I think Michael Jackson would be a good one. He was definitely a character. I don’t know too much about Kurt Cobain, but he’d be an interesting guy to talk to as well.
MLSsoccer.com: If the MLS Cup final had a halftime show like the Super Bowl, which artist would you like to see perform?
Zusi: Gosh! Beyonce killed it at the Super Bowl, didn’t she? I don’t think I’d make it into the locker room if she were out there. I’d probably stay out to watch and miss the team talk. I think U2 would be an amazing halftime show, they’re good stadium music.
MLSsoccer.com: Do you play any instruments?
Zusi: I played the trumpet growing up.
MLSsoccer.com: Why’d you quit?
Zusi: It was too loud and I wasn’t very good.
MLSsoccer.com: Which song should be used in a montage of your game? (In other words: What’s your Rocky theme tune?)
Zusi: “Dancing Queen” by ABBA.
