Guyana 2, Panama 4 | 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup Match Recap

Panama XI Gold Cup

With a 4-2 win over Guyana in Group D, Panama have inched towards a place in the knockout rounds of the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup.

In an eventful, high-paced match, Panama got the scoring underway through striker Abdiel Arroyo in the 16th minute, assisted by Red BullsMichael Murillo

Guyana didn't fold after going down, scoring  their first-ever Gold Cup goal through a Neil Danns penalty. Alberto Quintero's rash challenge on Jordan Dover gave the Golden Jaguars the golden opportunity to score from the spot.

Panama re-took the lead minutes later through an own goal before adding an insurance goal in the second half from the penalty spot. The initial penalty was saved, but controversially ordered to be retaken due to goalkeeper encroachment.

Danns scored Guyana's second, again with a penalty, in stoppage time.

Panama started with four MLS players —Murillo, his Red Bulls teammate Fidel EscobarEarthquakes centerback Harold Cummings and captain and Sounders mainstay Roman Torres.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: The expected result came through, though Guyana performed admirably. Panama still can top Group D, with a match against the United States looming on Wednesday.

Guyana's first Gold Cup goal in their history was special.

  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Panama had a number of strong performers, but Abdiel Arroyo perhaps had the best evening, scoring the opener and drawing a penalty.
