Gold Cup: Second test comes back negative for Mexico quintet

Guillermo Ochoa and five other Mexico players tested positive for a banned substance.

The second test undergone by the quintet of Mexico national team players who tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol has come back negative, the Mexican Soccer Federation announced on Tuesday.

“Today, the Laboratory of UCLA has informed us that the tests carried out on June 10 on the five players … have come back negative,” said the press release.

Guillermo Ochoa (pictured above), Francisco Javier Rodríguez, Antonio Naelson “Sinha”, Edgar Dueñas, and Christian Bermúdez all underwent a second test on June 10 in a hotel in Los Angeles. The samples were then analyzed in the laboratories of UCLA, who confirmed the five players are clean.

On June 9, it was revealed that all five players tested positive for clenbuterol in a test conducted on May 21, about two weeks prior to the start of the Gold Cup, and were separated from the squad.

Protocol mandates a division of each test into two samples. Because the positive reading on the May 21 test was taken from Sample A, the players will stay in Los Angeles until the reports from Test B come back.

“The FMF informs that today, tomorrow and the day after, national team players Guillermo Ochoa, Francisco Javier Rodríguez, Edgar Dueñas, Antonio Naelson and Christian Bermúdez, have personally been present or will be present before the authorities of the Laboratory of UCLA to ask that their corresponding B samples from their May 21 tests be opened,” said the press release.

Both Ochoa and Rodríguez were present when their respective B samples were opened. Dueñas and Sinha will attend the opening of their B samples on Wednesday. Finally, Bermúdez will attend the opening of his B sample on Thursday.

“The FMF will not release further information until the end of the proceedings initiated by the Disciplinary Committee in relation to the topic in question,” finalized the press release.
