Germany won't fear Euro group of death

Joachim Low

FRANKFURT - Germany will go into the draw for Euro 2008 in confident mood, despite the prospect of being drawn in a group of death.

Germany will be in pot three alongside Romania, Portugal and Spain which leaves the prospect of a group including Holland and World Cup finalists France and Italy.

The three-time European Champions could equally face Austria, Sweden and Russia when the draw is made on December 2 after rounding off their qualifying campaign with a goalless draw against Wales on Wednesday.

"We have faith in our ability and we know we can match the big nations," said defender Philipp Lahm.

"Our aims is to go as far as we can at the European Championships so we have got to beat whichever teams we face in the group."

Prior to Wednesday's draw with Wales, calculations had been made to determine whether it would have been better not to win in Frankfurt and hope for a better draw through finishing second in the group.

But that was made immaterial after the Czech Republic defeated Cyprus, but Germany coach Joachim Low admitted the thought of playing for a draw had never crossed his mind.

"The only time I will look at which teams are through and in which group will be tomorrow morning in the newspapers," he said.

"There was never any thought of losing to not be in a certain pot for the draw."
