Forge FC tops Cavalry FC in first-ever Canadian Premier League final

Ahead of next Sunday's 2019 MLS Cup, one Ontario team has already brought home a league title.

Hamilton's Forge FC defeated Cavalry FC of Calgary 1-0 on Saturday to complete a 2-0 aggregate victory in the final of the inaugural Canadian Premier League season.

Former Toronto FC academy player Tristan Borges scored in first-half stoppage time of the first leg, played at Tim Horton's field.

Former Montreal Impact contributor David Choiniere put the cup tie away with a goal in second-half stoppage time of Saturday's second leg at Calvary FC's ATCO Field.

Forge FC's title is, at least in terms of seeding, a mild upset, coming after they finished second behind Cavalry FC during both ends of the league's split seasons. They were five points back after the 10-match spring campaign, and only a point adrift following the 18-match fall phase.

Toronto FC will try to make it an Ontario sweep when they play the Seattle Sounders in next Sunday's MLS Cup (3 pm ET | ABC, Univision, TUDN, TSN, TVAS).
