FC Dallas 0, Colorado Rapids 0 | 2017 MLS Match Recap

The Colorado Rapids weathered a storm Saturday night to earn a road point with a scoreless tie against FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium.

Led by goalkeeper Tim Howard, Colorado held off a Dallas attack that saw 11 players combine to unleash 28 shots as the visitors posted their first shutout since May 27.

And, for the second straight week, Video Review disallowed a goal by Dallas forward Maximiliano Urruti. The home side appeared to take the lead just before the half when Urruti placed a curling shot past Howard from just outside the box. However, after the teams lined up to restart, referee Alan Kelly came away from the sideline monitor and motioned that the goal was disallowed due to an infraction committed by Dallas in the attacking phase of play that led up to the goal.

The game was also suspended in the 83rd minute for nearly an hour and a half due to weather, though neither side could find the winner after the break.

Three Things

  1. ZEROS: Colorado posted only its fourth shutout of the year, and first since Howard and Co. blanked Sporting KC 1-0 back on May 27. On the flip side, the team was shut out for the seventh time on the road, and remains winless away from home, now 0W-8L-2D on the year.
  2. STOP THE BLEEDING: After losing consecutive games by a combined 7-1 score, one would think FC Dallas could be pleased with a shutout and a draw. Except they've only won one of their last five matches in all competitions, and they've been held scoreless in three of those contests while being outscored 11-3.
  3. FORD PLAYS BIG: Rapids centerback Axel Sjoberg, who was starting his fourth straight game after missing much of the season with injuries, was replaced at halftime by rookie Kortne Ford after suffering a lower leg injury. The Homegrown player filled in admirably, making two goal-line clearances in the first 15 minutes of the second half.
