SAN JOSE - AEG and the San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club will remain in the Bay Area for the 2005 Major League Soccer season and continue to play their entire regular season schedule at San Jose State's Spartan Stadium.
"This has been a difficult year for our team and for our fans," said Earthquakes President and General Manager Alexi Lalas. "Despite the constant speculation regarding the future of this organization we were able to produce results on and off the field. We increased our attendance by 24% and we're excited to build on that success next year and reward our fans for their passion and loyalty."
San Jose has been home to some of the greatest moments in MLS history. The MLS Inaugural Game took place on April 6, 1996 in front of a sold-out crowd at Spartan Stadium as the San Jose Clash, as the team was formerly known, defeated D.C. United 1-0. (San Jose changed its name to Earthquakes prior to the 2000 MLS season.) On July 28, 2001, Bay Area soccer fans witnessed Landon Donovan score four goals in the MLS All-Star Game at Spartan Stadium as the West tied the East 6-6. Last season, the Earthquakes delighted the home crowd as they came from four goals down in Game Two of their total goal series with the Los Angeles Galaxy to win the game 5-2 and the series 5-4 in what many observers dubbed "the greatest game in MLS history".
