Goal of the Matchday

DC's Paul Arriola wins Week 33 AT&T MLS Goal of the Week in RFK swansong

Paul Arriola closed out D.C. United’s 22-year stint at RFK Stadium with a lovely goal on Sunday, and it’s also proved worthy of the 2017 season’s final AT&T MLS Goal of the Week award.

Arriola’s first-time volleyed finish of Luciano Acosta’s well-weighted cross cruised to the top spot in Week 33’s poll, earning 41 percent of the votes cast.

The dramatic, playoff-clinching strike by San Jose's Marco Urena on Decision Day presented by AT&T came in second at 21 percent, followed by the entries from Ola Kamara, Michael Murillo and Sebastian Giovinco.

The winning tally was Arriola’s debut goal both for D.C. and in MLS. But it wasn’t enough to garner a win in the Black-and-Red’s RFK swan song, as Murillo and the New York Red Bulls staged a second-half comeback to win the game 2-1 and gain Atlantic Cup bragging rights for the season.
