One Eastern Conference team with three U.S. Open Cup titles in their trophy case will meet an Eastern Conference foe coming off their first-ever USOC win when D.C. United host New York City FC Wednesday night at Audi Field.

This is the first meeting between the teams in the USOC and the winner will face either Orlando City SC or the New England Revolution in the quarterfinals on July 10.

D.C. United

D.C. United advanced to the Round of 16 with a 2-1 extra-time victory over the Philadelphia Union at Audi Field last Tuesday, needing a tie settled after 90 minutes for the fourth time in the last five years.

After 90 scoreless minutes, things heated up in the game's dying moments, as the Union struck first through Anthony Fontana in the 113th minute. Chris McCann leveled five minutes later, heading in a Wayne Rooney corner kick at the back post. With penalty kicks looming, Rooney converted from the spot in the 120th minute after Luciano Acosta was tripped inside the 18-yard box.

The Black-and-Red would love to avenge a regular-season loss to NYCFC at Audi Field, a 2-0 result on April 21. Alexandru Mitrita and Heber scored a goal in each half in the Cityzens' first win of the 2019 season.

New York City FC

After four straight years of ousters at the first asking, New York City finally picked up their first U.S. Open Cup win and it was an emphatic one. NYCFC defeated North Carolina FC of the USL Championship, 4-0, at Belson Stadium on the campus of St. John's University last Tuesday.

Keaton Parks, who has struggled to see playing time in MLS action, struck for a second-half brace after Jesus Medina's goal just before halftime followed a North Carolina own goal. Brad Stuver made an impressive double save late to secure the clean sheet.
