D.C. United have made a move for the future of their goalkeeping corps, announcing on Wednesday a trade with Orlando City to pick up Earl Edwards, Jr., in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft.

The 26-year-old San Diego native spent the past four seasons on Orlando City's roster, and played a career-high five games in MLS in 2018 for the Lions. Primarily a backup at MLS level in his career, Edwards has considerable experience at USL level for the Orlando City organization and the UCLA product's potential led to D.C. completing the deal for the goalkeeper.

ā€œLast season, Earl showed us that he has the size, athleticism and shot stopping ability to be a capable goalkeeper in MLS. We are excited to add him to our goalkeeping ranks and welcome him to the District as we prepare for 2019,ā€ Dave Kasper, D.C. United general manager and VP of soccer operations, said in a team statement.
