Bill Hamid - screams - celebration

D.C. United have acquired Bill Hamid on a permanent transfer from FC Midtjylland on a three-year deal using Targeted Allocation Money, the club announced Monday. Hamid left D.C. for Midtjylland in 2018 before returning on loan.

Hamid, 29, was a finalist for 2019 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year after leading the league in shutouts. Hamid has made 231 MLS appearances after signing as the club's first Homegrown player in 2009.

“Bringing Bill back to the club in 2020 and beyond was a top priority for us this offseason," United GM and VP of soccer operations Dave Kasper said in a statement. “Bill is a leader on and off the field and we’re excited to bring him back to the club that he has worked tirelessly for over the last ten seasons. He is among the best goalkeepers in MLS and and he resonates with fans and the community, and we know he is going to be an important piece at the club for the foreseeable future."

Hamid anchored D.C.'s defense yet again in 2019, which conceded just 38 goals, second-best in the league. The American was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2014. In total, Hamid has made 231 appearances across 10 MLS seasons and has accrued 87 wins and 68 shutouts.

Steven Goff reported in The Washington Post recently that D.C. would be paying a transfer fee of approximately $750,000 to re-acquire Hamid.
