Could Fredy Montero return to Whitecaps? Dos Santos admits it's "possible"

Fredy Montero - Vancouver Whitecaps FC - Celebrates goal pointing to sky

Among the non-expansion teams in MLS in 2019, no team is ringing in the changes more than Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

With new head coach Marc Dos Santos in place, Vancouver have been going through a thorough roster turnover, something that has touched all aspects of the squad.

With the Whitecaps in Hawaii at present for Preseason presented by Advocare, Dos Santos spoke to TSN1040 this week on location and among the many topics covered, the manager spoke about the forward situation for the team.

With just one pure forward on the squad at present, Dos Santos was asked about the progress in adding more.

"We are 100 percent aware of what we're building, and for the people thinking we're not going to have forwards, they can stay very calm, and just patient," he said.

"I always said we wanted to add two more strikers. At the moment we just have Theo Bair, who is young, still developing as a forward. Can we use a player like Yordy Reyna as a false nine in the way we play? Yes, we can. But we're definitely looking at two forwards...not looking, pretty much finalizing the deals and finalizing the things around contracts."

Dos Santos was asked about the profile of the forwards the team was targeting, whether they'll be new to the league or coming in with experience.

"We have a lot of fresh faces, so we need some that have MLS experience, so one of them is going to have MLS experience, and the other one is going to be a new face," he responded.

One possible player who fits one of those profiles is Fredy Montero, who spent the 2017 season on loan with Vancouver. Montero scored 13 goals and six assists in league play that year, and in his MLS career has 60 goals and 40 assists in 152 career regular season games.

Dos Santos was cagey when asked about Montero, but admitted that it was "possible" the Colombian could be a Whitecaps player in the future.

"He is a player at Sporting Lisbon. He was a player of the Vancouver Whitecaps. Do I like him? Yes, I like him," he said.
