The Seattle Sounders are unbeaten in six. And it kind of feels like Eddie Johnson is just getting started.
The veteran striker had his best game of the season on Saturday, scoring two and setting up another as his side dropped a rave green-tinged hurting on Western Conference frontrunners FC Dallas. EJ was clearly the man of the match, and was also named MLS Player of the Week. The numbers agreed, so he finds himself at the top of the Castrol Index Weekly Top 20 as well.
Johnson's run of strong form has come while playing in the central channel, and allowing either Lamar Neagle or Obafemi Martins to do much of the field-stretching. In other words, Johnson is now more of a pure No. 9, and it's working out pretty well, since Neagle found a spot in the Castrol Top 20 as well, coming in at No. 4 thanks to his efforts in the 4-2 win.
Landon Donovan continued his return from an offseason sabbatical with two strong performances this week, though obviously it was his midweek performance against Philadelphia that was the stronger. Donovan ended up with a goal and two assits as his LA Galaxy took the Union apart to the tune of 4-1, and claimed the No. 2 spot for the week.
Columbus Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum continued to be one of the more underrated netminders in the league, and his solid showing in a 1-0 win at Toronto was good enough for the No. 3 spot. New York Red Bulls netminder Luis Robles, who stymied Donovan and the Galaxy on Sunday, rounded out the top five.
