American striker Bobby Wood is on a tear through the 2. Bundesliga.
With a pair of goals on Friday for Union Berlin, including a splendid finish one-on-one against SC Paderborn goalkeeper Daniel Heuer, Wood has now reserved a spot in American soccer lore. The 23-year-old Wood is the top single-season scorer for an American in Germany's two top-flight leagues.
Wood, who joined Union Berlin in summer 2015, has 16 league goals for his new club to date. That puts him ahead of Columbus Crew SC striker Conor Casey (14 goals with Karslruher SC in 2003-04) and former USMNT star Eric Wynalda (14 goals with Saarbrucken in 1993-94).
For US men's national team fans, Wood's recent form lends a big dose of optimism for Copa America this summer.
