Goal of the Matchday

Atlanta United midfielder Emerson Hyndman wins AT&T Goal of the Week for Week 1

It was raining golazos in Week 1, making the season's first AT&T Goal of the Week vote a tough one.

But in the end, it was Atlanta United's Emerson Hyndman who gets the honors for the opening GOTW of the 2020 MLS campaign after taking home 32.04% of the vote for his go-ahead goal in the 37th minute of the Five Stripes' 2-1 season-opening victory over expansion side Nashville SC at Nissan Stadium.

It's not a bad choice. Hyndman's rocket volley was a stunner, requiring a classy bit of individual skill to chest a clearance attempt by a Nashville defender to himself before smashing home the shot into an extremely tight window at the near post, just past the outstretched hand of diving goalkeeper Joe Willis

He had some stiff competition, with San Jose Earthquakes' defender Oswaldo Alanis' dramatic free-kick equalizer against Toronto FC finishing in second place with 27.27% of the vote. LAFC's Carlos Vela finished in third with 18.59% for his gorgeous chip over Luis Robles that wound up as the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Inter Miami CF. Sporting Kansas City's Gadi Kinda finished in fourth with 16.33% for his debut scorcher in a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps, with the LA Galaxy's Cristian Pavon rounding it out with 5.77% after his solo golazo in his team's 1-1 road draw against the Houston Dynamo.
