Are Atlanta United becoming "America's team"?

Atlanta United celebrate Kevin Kratz goal vs. New England - Sept. 13, 2017

Every major league in North America has a team that, for reasons good or bad, stands out as iconic across the USA. The NFL has the Dallas Cowboys. The NBA has the LA Lakers. MLB has the New York Yankees.

MLS has Atlanta United?

Deadspin labeled them "America's Team," taking note of ATL's impressive run and their entertaining, high-scoring brand of soccer played in front of big-time crowds.

While some will argue that MLS is still a little too young to have that type of flagship organization, that doesn’t mean a few teams haven't already been making their case:

The early D.C. United championships raised the national profile of that club and the LA Galaxy have occupied an international spotlight over many years by winning and signing some of the most iconic players in league history. Not to mention Sporting Kansas City, who play in the self-proclaimed "Soccer Capital of America" and are slowly putting together a compelling body of work.
