American Exports: Sacha Kljestan plays, but Anderlecht settle for tie in Champions League opener

Sacha Kljestan and Anderlecht react to a Champions League loss against Olympiacos

AMSTERDAM – Anderlecht sub Sacha Kljestan was among the culpable on home side Galatasaray's last-minute equalizer as the teams played out a 1-1 draw on opening night of the Champions League group stage.

The Mauves grabbed the lead seven minutes after the break on a terrific effort by Dennis Praet. Kljestan entered in the 66th minute, mostly providing competent ball movement without a single turnover.

However, as the clock wound down, Kljestan was beaten into the visitors' area by the touchline dance of Gala defender Aurélien Chedjou, who centered for Burak Yilmaz to even the score. On October 10, Matchday 2 will bring early Group D leaders Borussia Dortmund to Anderlecht's door.

Over in the English Championship, Tim Ream ably worked at right back as Bolton hit three times in the final half hour to rally for a 3-2 victory over guests Rotherham.

While he had one error covered by a teammate's tackle, the former New York Red Bulls defender put on a solid display. Ream notched four clearances and a team-high three tackles on the defensive side, and also drew a save from the away goalkeeper shortly after intermission.

With their first win in seven games this season, Bolton jumped out of the relegation mire on goal differential.

Elsewhere, Brek Shea worked 54 minutes from the start and Jonathan Spector 75 as an injury sub at right back in Birmingham City's 2-0 home defeat against Sheffield Wednesday.

Shea, on loan from Stoke City, managed to participate in a pair of good first half chances despite being limited to 22 non-defensive touches on the night. He missed short side from a sharp angle near the half hour, and then came close to an assist after it as Paul Caddis fired his knockdown off the woodwork.

Spector, meanwhile, had a fairly quiet shift, but did co-lead the Brums with three pass interceptions. Now winless in five, Birmingham stand a point above Bolton in 20th place.
