American Exports: Holden helps Bolton advance in return

Stuart Holden returned to the Bolton lineup

AMSTERDAM — A handful of American Exports clocked in for cup duty in Europe on Tuesday, with Stuart Holden making a 90-minute return from injury in Bolton's 2-0 Carling Cup victory at Aston Villa.

With normal Villa tourney starter Brad Guzan watching from the home dugout, Holden saw his first action in six months to help Wanderers advance to the round of 16.

Elsewhere, Robbie Findley netted his third goal in as many Carling Cup outings, but it wasn't enough as Nottingham Forest fell 4-3 to Premier League guests Newcastle in extra time.

With the Reds down one just out of the break, Findley buried a long-range drive for his fourth goal in seven games on the campaign. It was the first of three Forest rallies on the night, but Newcastle eventually won out when Fabricio Coloccini nodded home the 120th-minute decider.

Meanwhile, in Dutch KNVB Cup second-round play, Charles Kazlauskas worked a solid 120 minutes as Helmond Sport bowed out with a 3-1 overtime loss at Go Ahead Eagles.
