American Exports: Cunningham leaves Comunicaciones

Jeff Cunningham at Comunicaciones training

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – MLS’ all-time leading goalscorer is no longer with Guatemalan first-division club Comunicaciones, the club has confirmed to MLSsoccer.com.

Cunningham’s exit didn’t warrant an official announcement on the club website, but became obvious, with Comunicaciones filling their foreigner berths and removing the 35-year-old striker from the “players” sections on the club website.

The low-key exit stands in marked contrast to the furor that greeted Cunningham when he arrived at Comunicaciones in January.

Cunningham spent 14 seasons with six different MLS clubs, but left for Guatemala in the hope of broadening his horizons and fulfilling an ambition he harbored of playing abroad, as he explained to MLSsoccer.com back in March.

He made a dream debut for the club back in January, when he scored the goal that sealed the big Guatemalan clásico against Municipal, but he went on to play only 12 more times for the club, scoring three more goals.

Cunningham’s future is, as yet, unknown.
