American Exports: Bobby Wood, Union Berlin denied first win | Andrew Wooten comes up empty

AMSTERDAM – Bobby Wood and Union Berlin were cruelly denied a duck-breaking victory by a late own goal on Friday night, settling for a 1-1 home share with RB Leipzig.

The US forward worked 80 minutes up top, departing with the Iron Union still in possession of a slim lead. Wood carved out the first good chance of the game after seven minutes, but fired just wide.

The American also enjoyed an active start to the second half, and narrowly missed high from a tight angle two minutes out of intermission. The Red Bulls knotted things up seven minutes from time to keep the Union Berlin winless through five rounds; thanks to their four draws, the capital crew tentatively sit in 10th place.

Around the 2.Bundesliga, Andrew Wooten came up empty despite some fine efforts as Sandhausen crashed to Earth with a 4-1 defeat at Freiburg.

The right winger could have notched an assist had his pinpoint 17th-minute cross found a better finish. Wooten then went close to cancelling Sandhausen's early deficit by firing inches wide of the far post on both 21 and 29 minutes.

From that point on, Wooten only managed to put one of three tries on target, and that was a weak shot straight at the home netminder 10 minutes past halftime. Due to their first loss on the season, Sandhausen dipped to seventh place.
