American Exports: Altidore battling ankle injury

Jozy Altidore bagged a brace for AZ Alkmaar

AMSTERDAM — The verdict on AZ Alkmaar striker Jozy Altidore's availability for their weekend visit from fellow fast starter Feyenoord will be decided after he gives his minor ankle sprain a run in full training on Saturday.

Altidore, who has six goals in five competitive home matches for the Cheese Farmers, had the injury checked out on Friday and the club are confident it's not a major setback.

"He hopes he can play on Sunday," AZ press officer Daan Schippers told MLSsoccer.com on Friday. "It all depends on today's training."

The US international was originally slated to start Thursday's KNVB Cup win over Groningen, but was scratched after struggling with his ankle during pregame drills.

"It seemed he could play on Thursday," said Schippers. "But it felt worse than expected [during warm-ups]."

Second to FC Twente only on number of goals scored, AZ stand one point and two places above unbeaten Feyenoord through six Eredivisie rounds. After Sunday's clash, Altidore & Co. are scheduled to fly out for a Thursday Europa League encounter at Ukrainian side Metalist Kharkiv.
