Houston Dynamo star Alberth Elis' future has been in question for some time, but the player says he wants to stay with the club in 2020.
Elis spoke following the Dynamo's season finale on Decision Day presented by AT&T, a 4-2 win over the LA Galaxy at BBVA Stadium, where he had a goal and two assists to lead the home side to victory.
“I have a contract for one more year and my decision is to finish my contract and leave at the end free of charge, taking the best decision. I hope this doesn’t bring me any problems next year,” Elis said in Spanish, as translated by John Rojas.
Elis has been Houston's top star since joining for the 2017 season. He matched a season high in assists this year, with 10, but 2019 was the first season where the Honduran international didn't reach double-digit goals in league play, as he notched nine. All told, in 82 MLS regular season games in his career, the winger has 30 goals and 24 assists.
The Dynamo missed the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs, with head coach Wilmer Cabrera fired in August.
He's been linked to a potential move abroad, particularly earlier this season, but would Elis' intention to play out his deal and leave on a free transfer after the 2020 season lead the Dynamo to transfer him early to get some money from the player?
"I hope I can finish the contract in the best way possible," he said. "I already told [the front office] that I want to finish the contract. Hopefully this doesn’t bring any issues because I don’t know if they want me to stay or not. Let’s see what happens.”
