MLS Fantasy: Points galore as Week 17's DGW gets off to flying start on Wednesday

You guys remember Robbie Keane? Irish guy – scores a lot of goals? Likes to do somersaults?

The LA striker earned a big blue star next to his name with 14 fantasy points on Wednesday night, one of many stars to break through an extremely productive fantasy night around the league.

The usual suspects came through for their fantasy managers in midweek. Sebastian Giovinco and Kei Kamara rewarded the managers who added them with double-digit scores, while another popular addition in Stefan Frei turned in nine points in an otherwise forgettable Seattle performance. Some new faces also populated the midweek Dream Team, with Ambroise Oyongo (one goal, two total bonus points) and Kemar Lawrence (an assist and a clean sheet) also making the cut.

To get an idea of how lucrative the midweek matches were, yours truly scored 57 points and went down nine spots in the overall rankings. The top player scored an insane 95 points.

MLS Fantasy: Points galore as Week 17's DGW gets off to flying start on Wednesday -

LA Galaxy Restate Intent

We’ll start with LA, who posted a 5-0 statement win at home against Portland and have now scored 10 goals in their last two matches. Juninho, Sebastian Lletget, and Jose Villarreal all scored from the Galaxy midfield, while Robbie Rogers added a clean sheet and a rare goal from his left back position.

If you started any Portland defenders, I have some bad news for you. Alvas Powell scored only one fantasy point—and he was the best of the bunch. Nat Borchers and Sueño (Jorge Villafaña) each put up a donut, while Liam Ridgewell was sent off to earn a -2 total. Condolences to all involved.

Morales Sent Off in RSL Loss

You never like to see a star get sent off, but it’s even worse when it’s in the first match of a DGW. Javier Morales continues to confound fantasy managers, posting a dreadful -2 after his DOGSO red card.

Despite finishing the match with a two-man advantage (RSL's Demar Phillips was also ejected), the Red Bulls were frustrated to only push one past Nick Rimando in the 1-0 win at Red Bull Arena. Bradley Wright-Phillips failed to bounce back from his nightmare game against Vancouver, posting only two fantasy points. The affordable Matt Miazga returned to the starting lineup after his stint with the US U-20 team and posted a solid eight points.

Seattle Fizzle in Philly

Having now failed to score in two consecutive matches, the Sounders tepid offense continues to stumble without Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins. No Seattle player in the patchwork starting XI topped four fantasy points in the 1-0 loss to the Union.

On the other side of the ball, Sheanon Williams exploits landed him on the midweek Dream Team, thanks in part to an assist on the game’s only goal by C.J. Sapong, who has now scored in five of his last six games. Budget option Richie Marquez continued his run in the starting lineup for Jim Curtin’s side, posting a solid seven fantasy points.

Elsewhere Around The League

Kamara netted twice for Columbus while Ethan Finlay moved into the top spot on the league’s assist table with his ninth helper of the season. Toronto handled Montreal, 3-1, behind the exploits of Giovinco and Michael Bradley, who each posted a dozen, while the Impact’s fantasy bright spot was Oyongo due to his well-taken goal.

Conor Doyle continues to see regular playing time for D.C. United and added his second goal of the season, while Harry Shipp and Chicago’s attack once again couldn’t get on the same page in a 1-0 defeat at Toyota Park. Orlando’s two-man combo came through again with Cyle Larin and Kaká both finding the net in a shutout win over the hapless Rapids
