HOW ACQUIRED: Signed on June 25, 2014, as a Designated Player. Signed a contract extension on September 1, 2016, utilizing targeted allocation money at the start of the 2017 season.
In the long list of defensive Designated Player signings, few had the immediate and devastating impact that Liam Ridgewell did in 2015. After only playing in MLS for half a season, Ridgewell hit the ground running in 2015 and formed the basis for the team’s defensive shape during its run to the MLS title. A lock-down defender who’s no stranger to the occasional foray forward, Ridgewell has proved his worth many times over already in his stint in Portland. After nearly 10 years in the English Premier League, the Englishman is perhaps in the form of his life.
