July 3, 2016 (Week 17, MLS Game #167)
12 p.m. ET (ESPN in USA; MLS LIVE in Canada)

The 7-0 result in their most recent meeting in May looms large as NYCFC seek to avenge the New York Red Bulls for one of the heaviest defeats in MLS history.

But it's not just about revenge: There are important implications in the Eastern Conference standings. A win would see NYCFC vault into sole possession of the top spot in the East, while the Red Bulls can catch the Philadelphia Union at No. 1 with a win.

  • NYCFC have won their last two league matches, including a 2-0 road win in Seattle last weekendFrank Lampard scored for a second consecutive game as New York City FC extended their road undefeated streak to four matches.
  • The Red Bulls, meanwhile are facing their fourth road match in a row. They came away with a single point from trips to Salt Lake and Columbus in league play. And then on Wednesday, despite taking a lead in a US Open Cup Round of 16 match in Philadelphia, RBNY watched the Union overturn the result to knock them out of the tournament.
  • The teams are meeting for the second time this season. The Red Bulls defeated NYCFC 7-0 on May 21 at Yankee Stadium to take the first #NYDerby, the victory matching the largest margin of victory in MLS history ā€“ all of which were achieved by teams playing on the road. The seven goals scored by the Red Bulls were also the most in a single game in the clubā€™s 21-year history, tied for the second-most goals ever scored by one team in an MLS game.
  • The teams have met four times, and the Red Bulls have won all four, twice at each ground, now with a 14-2 goal differential in the series. Wright-Phillips has owned the rivalry, scoring in each match, netting six goals in all, including two in the first game this year.
