San Jose Earthquakes 2, Portland Timbers 1 | MLS Match Recap

Chris Wondolowski started things off, and Quincy Amarikwa polished off the Portland Timbers in fine fashion with a classy, long-distance chip in the San Jose Earthquakes' 2-1 home victory Sunday afternoon at Avaya Stadium.

Wondolowski turned in an Anibal Godoy cross at the 30-minute mark for his second goal in as many games this season, and Amarikwa floated a perfectly placed lob over the head of Timbers goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey just inside the far post right before halftime for San Jose’s second consecutive win to start the season.

Jack McInerney opened his Timbers account, pulling one back in the 89th minute after a scramble in front of goal.

Portland were without center back and captain Liam Ridgewell, who tweeted before the match that he suffered a hamstring injury Friday. The defending MLS Cup champions lost for the first time since Oct. 3 of last season, breaking a 10-game unbeaten streak.

Three Things

  1. WOODWORKING: Things might have been different for the Timbers if not for a few inches here or there. In the fifth minute, winger Lucas Melano fired a laser from the right wing that slammed off the goalpost. Midfielder Diego Chara also drew woodwork on a shot of his own in the 53rd minute. In all, Portland outshot San Jose 16-8, although only directed two on frame.
  2. MOVING ON UP: Wondolowski is off to a hot start this season, having scored two goals in his first two games. And he’s moving into some rarified air on the all-time MLS goal-scoring list. Now with 111 goals, Wondolowski is just three behind Ante Razov for fourth place.
  3. SETTING THE PACE: With Week 2 completed, San Jose are one of three teams in the league to win their first two games of the season. They join Western Conference rivals Sporting Kansas City and the East’s Montreal Impact. It’s a start that should sit well with Quakes supporters after they finished one spot out and four points shy of the MLS Cup Playoffs last year.
