New York Red Bulls defender Matt Miazga begins training with RB Leipzig, picks up injury

Matt Miazga on the slide

The moves keep on coming for the New York Red Bulls.

Undoubtedly the one of the most headline-grabbing clubs in MLS this offseason, the Red Bulls announced on Tuesday that 19-year-old defender Matt Miazga has joined sister club RB Leipzig for a training stint in Doha, Qatar.

The Red Bulls said that there is no formal agreement for Miazga to join the 2. Bundesliga side for anything more than a training stint, and that the Homegrown center back – who just finished helping the US Under-20s qualify for this summer’s FIFA U-20 World Cup – is expected to re-join New York for their preseason camp in Orlando.

The announcement comes on the same day that the Red Bulls traded established midfielder Eric Alexander, Cameroon international defender Ambroise Oyongo, allocation money and an international roster spot to Montreal in exchange for midfielder Felipe and the Impact's No. 1 spot in the allocation order.

“This is a great development opportunity for Matt to train with an international club,” New York sporting director Ali Curtis said in a statement released by the Red Bulls. “We are excited for him to spend some time and keep up the momentum from his success playing with the US U-20s and qualifying for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.”

Unfortunately, it appears that Miazga’s stint with Leipzig has gotten off to an inauspicious start, with the German club tweeting that the Clifton, N.J. native picked up a charley horse injury in training on Tuesday.

This is the second-straight year that New York has had a player train in the offseason with one of their Red Bull sister clubs; Homegrown goalkeeper Santiago Castaño spent time last offseason with Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg.
