Portland Timbers fans must have been torn on Monday night: Get the secondary or third kit?
That's because the club on Monday unveiled two new editions of both shirts at a season kick-off event in Portland's Pearl District.
Just like last year, the dominant color of the secondary jersey is still rose red. But the 2014 edition features a black-to-red fade, which is meant to reference the actual opening of roses at Portland's International Rose Test Garden.
The black-to-red metallic effect is also present in the club crest, the Rose Ball on the lower jock tag and the "Stand Together" slogan on the back of the secondary shirt.
Similar to the most recent Timbers third kit, the 2014 edition is also a throwback jersey featuring the green and gold from the line chanted by the Timbers Army: "And when I go, make sure I'm wearing green and gold." Those very woods are highlighted on the neck line.
Even jersey sponsor Alaska Airlines got into the retro spirit, switching to a font identical to the one used by the airline in the late 1970s.
Down on the jock tag of the third shirt are the letters “RCTID” (Rose City ‘Til I Die). A pair of crossed axes on the back is a nod to the club's community service.
Every MLS team is unveiling new jerseys as part of 2014 Jersey Week, which is being held from March 3-7 in the lead-up to the start of the new season on Saturday, March 8.
