Both the San Jose Earthquakes and the New England Revolution will rue dropped points in a gritty 0-0 draw from Avaya Stadium in San Jose on Wednesday evening.
The 'Quakes were forced to make an unplanned change towards the end of the first half when Quincy Amarikwa left the game injured and was replaced by longtime MLS journeyman Chad Barrett.
The chances were scarce in the first half with the most notable opportunity coming in the form of a Chris Wondolowski header that the American international just barely put wide in the 21st minute.
Kei Kamara nearly gave the visitors a lead in the early-goings of the second half when his close-range effort slowly pinged off the outside of the post. San Jose almost broke the draw themselves in the 70th minute when Barrett smashed a left-footed shot from outside the box that zipped past the far bar.
The game was closely contested throughout and featured 79 duels and 28 fouls.

- UNLUCKY KEI: Kamara was extremely close to nailing home an effort that would have sealed three points for the desperate Revolution, however his second half attempt rattled off the post and out of danger. This moment marked the 6th occasion that Kamara has hit the post in MLS 2016 play. Only Toronto FC’s Sebastian Giovinco has had more shots careen off the woodwork so far this season with eight total for the Italian.
- A POINT IS A POINT: The Revs are thirsty for points after having lost four games in a row prior to Wednesday evening’s road grind in San Jose. And while being shutout will certainly frustrate head coach Jay Heaps, whose side has only scored 2 goals in their last five games, a point after such a dry spell will make the cross country flight home slightly easier to swallow.
- ANOTHER STALEMATE FOR SJ: It has been a summer of gridlock for the Earthquakes who, since May 22, have drawn in eight of their 14 MLS contests. Tonight’s story was no different: solid defending that only conceded three shots on target but offense that lacked a bit, as the club only mustered a single effort on frame. As time ticks towards October, Dominic Kinnear will need to search for a solution in the attack.
