A crucial meeting of teams scrapping for places in the MLS Cup Playoffs in the Eastern Conference is ahead when D.C. United play host to the Chicago Fire on Saturday evening at RFK Stadium. United sit right on the red line in sixth place in the conference, just a point ahead of seventh-place Orlando City, returning home off of a 1-1 draw at the Montreal Impact at midweek. The Fire are six points below the line, tied for ninth in the East, following their 2-2 draw with the LA Galaxy at Toyota Park also at midweek.

- United return home following a midweek trip to Montréal, which ended a four-game homestand where they went 1-0-3. That home stretch followed a four-game road swing July 1-23, where United went 0-2-2.
- The Fire’s 3-0 win at the Montréal Impact on Saturday was their first on their travels since July 23, 2014, a span of 36 away matches without victory. It also ended their club-record road losing run after nine games, which equaled the 10th-longest such streak in league annals.
- The teams are meeting for the second time this season. The Fire’s Jonathan Campbell and United’s Patrick Nyarko traded goals on either side of halftime to leave the teams in a 1-1 draw April 30 at Toyota Park.
