A pair of clubs in real need of points to start moving up the Western Conference table meet when Sporting Kansas City entertain Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday afternoon at Children's Mercy Park before an ESPN audience. Sporting return home sitting a point below the red line, suffering a second consecutive 1-0 defeat last weekend in a loss at the Colorado Rapids. Sounders FC are a further eight points back in the conference, starting their road swing with a 3-1 loss at arch-rivals Portland Timbers.
- Sounders FC weren’t able to build on their first win in five matches – a 5-0 midweek defeat of FC Dallas – dropping a 3-1 decision to the Portland Timbers on Sunday afternoon at Providence Park.
- The teams are meeting for the second time this season. Nuno Andre Coelho scored the game’s only goal in the 73rd minute as Sporting took a 1-0 win in the season opener for both clubs, March 6 at CenturyLink Field.
- The opening win ended a Sounders FC five-game home undefeated streak alive at home vs. Sporting, after SKC won 1-0 in Seattle in 2009, the first meeting ever between the clubs.
- Sporting have defeated Sounders FC once all-time in six meetings in league play – a 1-0 win last June 6 at Sporting Park. Sounders FC have won four of the six MLS encounters all-time in Kansas City, with one draw.
