Montreal Impact's Ignacio Piatti out three weeks after having hand surgery

The Montreal Impact announced on Friday that they’ll be without star midfielder Ignacio Piatti for about three weeks after the Argentine had hand surgery earlier in the day.

Piatti suffered the injury in Montreal’s 2-1 loss at Orlando on May 21. He played in the Impact’s 3-2 win against LA on Saturday and in their 4-2 Canadian Championship semifinal loss to Toronto FC on Wednesday, but had “no choice but to undergo surgery,” according to the club.

“Nacho has a slight hand injury, and after imaging tests, doctors determined that he needed surgery,” Montreal head coach Mauro Biello said on Friday. “The ligaments of the thumb had to be repaired immediately, because it would affect his everyday life.”

Piatti will miss the second leg of Montreal’s Canadian Championship series against Toronto on Wednesday, June 8 while recovering from surgery. The Impact need to overcome a 4-2 deficit at home in order to advance to the final against the winner of the Vancouver Whitecaps-Ottawa Fury semifinal.

It’s not yet clear if Piatti will be back in time for the Impact’s next MLS match on June 18 at Columbus. The 31-year-old leads Montreal with eight goals and has three assists in 13 MLS appearances this year.
