MLS Power Rankings, Week 13: Montreal get back into top five

BIGGEST MOVERS: NY Red Bulls +5 spots | LA, NYC, SKC, SEA, TOR -3 spots

1

LAST WEEK: 1

HIGH: 1 | LOW: 20

Their home record is unblemished no more, but they're still top of the league on points and points per game and their defense remains rock solid with or without their star internationals. Don't expect the Rapids to fade all that much.

Latest result: Drew vs. Philadelphia, 1-1

Last five results: W-W-D-W-D

Next MLS match: June 18 vs. Chicago

2

LAST WEEK: 2

HIGH: 2 | LOW: 19

This week could have been a bloodbath for Philly, but instead it was yet another data point that this group can compete like veterans. A pair of road points â€“ one at a conference foe, the other at the Supporters' Shield leaders â€“ is an impressive haul.

Latest result: Drew at Orlando City, 2-2; Drew at Colorado, 1-1

Last five results: D-D-W-D-D

Next MLS match: Wednesday vs. Columbus

3

LAST WEEK: 3

HIGH: 1 | LOW: 7

Might have let a good opportunity go to waste by failing to cash in on an opportunity against a short-handed San Jose team, but any road point in the West is as good as gold.

Latest result: Drew at San Jose, 0-0

Last five results: L-W-W-W-D

Next MLS match: Thursday vs. Houston

4

LAST WEEK: 9

HIGH: 4 | LOW: 17

We rarely see big, in-season trades in MLS, and we'd like to ask one question: Why? The Red Bulls are 3-1-1 since acquiring Aurelien Collin, who has channeled his 2013 form since arriving in New York. They're now up to second in the East, and with the way they're playing, are probably entertaining thoughts of repeating as Shield champs.

Latest result: Won vs. Toronto, 3-0

Last five results: D-L-W-W-W

Next MLS match: June 19 vs. Seattle (FS1)

5

LAST WEEK: 7

HIGH: 1 | LOW: 7

Got a little help from the opposing 'keeper in ending that six-game winless skid, and got yet another impressive performance from wingers Dominic Oduro and Ignacio Piatti. They're still working to rediscover the midfield flow they had back in March, however.

Latest result: Won vs. LA Galaxy, 3-2

Last five results: D-D-D-L-W

Next MLS match: June 18 at Columbus

6

LAST WEEK: 5

HIGH: 1 | LOW: 15

RSL are, perhaps, regressing to the mean a little bit with only two wins from their last six. Their attack continues to be opportunistic, but at some point they have to start generating A) more possession, and B) more chances directly from that possession.

Latest result: Lost at Columbus, 4-3

Last five results: W-L-L-W-L

Next MLS match: Thursday at NYCFC

7

LAST WEEK: 4

HIGH: 2 | LOW: 9

And thus ends a pretty solid nine-game unbeaten run â€“ the sort LA usually save for the second half of the season. It's plenty apparent that the attack is going to stay lethal no matter what, but this team has only one shutout in 2016 despite offseason reinforcements at defensive midfield and along the backline.

Latest result: Lost at Montreal, 3-2

Last five results: D-W-D-D-L

Next MLS match: Thursday vs. Sporting KC

8

LAST WEEK: 8

HIGH: 6 | LOW: 13

They just keep grinding out these results. The Quakes need at least one more difference-maker in attack to seriously threaten the top of the West, but given how solid the defense and midfield are (and how good David Bingham is in net), they're not going to get overrun no matter how long Wondo, Godoy et al are gone.

Latest result: Drew vs. Dallas, 0-0

Last five results: D-L-W-D-D

Next MLS match: Wednesday at Portland

9

LAST WEEK: 6

HIGH: 1 | LOW: 9

This long break comes at the right time for the reeling Reds, who saw their lives flash before their eyes when Sebastian Giovinco limped off injured. Time for the MVP and Jozy Altidore to get healthy, and time for the front office to find a quality back-up forward, and time for Greg Vanney to figure out what's gone wrong with the defense.

Latest result: Lost at NY Red Bulls, 3-0

Last five results: W-L-D-D-L

Next MLS match: June 18 at Toronto

10

LAST WEEK: 10

HIGH: 8 | LOW: 14

Coughing up home points to the Western Conference bottom-dwellers is probably not how Carl Robinson wanted to bounce back after last week's loss in Portland. The good news? Octavio Rivero got his second goal in his last four appearances. He's got the talent â€“ perhaps now he'll be able to become a consistent threat in the 18.

Latest result: Drew vs. Houston, 1-1

Last five results: W-W-W-L-D

Next MLS match: June 18 vs. New England (TSN)

11

LAST WEEK: 11

HIGH: 1 | LOW: 12

A road point is nice, but Portland still have yet to post a shutout this season. They'll have a big chance to fix that on Wednesday against the short-handed Quakes.

Latest result: Drew at Chicago, 1-1

Last five results: L-L-L-W-D

Next MLS match: Wednesday vs. San Jose

12

LAST WEEK: 13

HIGH: 6 | LOW: 17

They coughed up home points, then went on the road and got a point. All-in-all, it's not good enough â€“ but at the same time, they're better than they were a month ago. At some point, though, they've got to figure out how to defend set pieces.

Latest result: Drew vs. Philadelphia, 2-2; Drew at NYCFC, 2-2

Last five results: D-L-W-D-D

Next MLS match: June 18 vs. San Jose

13

LAST WEEK: 16

HIGH: 10 | LOW: 17

Got a gift of a PK and then won it with a soft, late goal. Perhaps that's the sort of break the Revs needed to turn this season around.

Latest result: Won vs. Seattle, 2-1

Last five results: D-L-W-L-W

Next MLS match: June 18 at Vancouver (TSN)

14

LAST WEEK: 17

HIGH: 14 | LOW: 20

Looking at their offseason defections, in-season injuries and general lack of firepower, and you can see why so many figured United would fall below the red line this year. But there they sit in fifth place, still grinding out results. It's impressive.

Latest result: Won at Sporting KC, 1-0

Last five results: D-L-W-L-W

Next MLS match: Wednesday vs. Seattle

15

LAST WEEK: 12

HIGH: 9 | LOW: 20

The way this team manages to give away home points leaves us speechless.

Latest result: Drew vs. Orlando City, 2-2

Last five results: W-W-D-L-D

Next MLS match: Thursday vs. Real Salt Lake

16

LAST WEEK: 18

HIGH: 5 | LOW: 19

The Power Rankings Politburo would like to point out that Crew SC are unbeaten since trading Kei Kamara. This season hasn't gone like they expected in Columbus, but they're only a couple of points out of a playoff spot with a game in hand.

Latest result: Won vs. Real Salt Lake, 4-3

Last five results: L-D-D-D-W

Next MLS match: Wednesday at Philadelphia

17

LAST WEEK: 14

HIGH: 1 | LOW: 14

Pretty easily this season's biggest disappointment, Sporting KC continue to be idea-less in attack and error-prone at the back. That's a gruesome combo, but a win at LA on Thursday could cure a lot of ills.

Latest result: Lost vs. D.C. United, 1-0

Last five results: L-L-W-L-L

Next MLS match: Thursday at LA Galaxy

18

LAST WEEK: 15

HIGH: 7 | LOW: 18

Garth Lagerwey said reinforcements are on the way â€“ a DP-level playmaker (widely expected to be Uruguay No. 10 Nicholas Lodeiro) and a "TAM-level player." The 4-7-1 Sounders will likely need both players to be immediate difference-makers.

Latest result: Lost at New England, 2-1

Last five results: W-W-L-L-L

Next MLS match: Wednesday at D.C. United

19

LAST WEEK: 19

HIGH: 18 | LOW: 20

The Fire could use some serious summer window additions, though it remains to be seen whether they'll be busy or stand pat. Right now it's not clear who comprises the core Veljko Paunovic wants to build around.

Latest result: Drew vs. Portland, 1-1

Last five results: L-L-L-W-D

Next MLS match: June 18 at Colorado

20

LAST WEEK: 20

HIGH: 10 | LOW: 20

The post-Owen Coyle era got off to a good start with a road point and a functional 4-3-3. One thing to keep an eye on: Luis Garrido is approaching a return to fitness after last year's horrific leg break. If the new regime are determined to play with a true No. 6 rather than Coyle's hybrid system, Garrido would make a ton of sense to bring back into the fold.

Latest result: Drew at Vancouver, 1-1

Last five results: W-L-W-L-D

Next MLS match: Thursday at Dallas
