AMSTERDAM – Sandhausen attack ace Andrew Wooten leveled matters from the spot to remain tied atop the 2.Bundesliga goal chart in a 1-1 home share with table-toppers VfL Bochum.
Stationed up top after working the first five games of the season at right wing, the recent US call-up bagged his sixth of the term two minutes prior to halftime. Scant moments after a dangerous Wooten cross was grabbed off the head of Jakub Kosecki, the Poland midfielder was tripped up in the area. The American then stepped up to tuck his penalty try safely inside the lower left corner.
Wooten came close to bagging his third game-winner of the young season on two occasions after the break. He was left head-in-hands after closely shaving the post from a great position three minutes out of intermission and fired just past the same post again three minutes from time.
Though winless in three and carrying a three-point deduction for license violations, Sandhausen tentatively hold sixth place.
Meanwhile, Caleb Stanko went unused in Freiburg's 2-0 victory at Kaiserslautern. Thanks to their third win in a row, the second-place visitors crept to within one point of leaders Bochum.
Over in the English Championship, Daniel Williams returned from US national team duty to watch from the home dugout as Reading steamrolled Ipswich Town 5-1. Now unbeaten in five since opening day, the Royals conditionally rose to fifth place.
