Transfer Watch: Is Juventus legend Andrea Pirlo heading to MLS? Or will it be Australia?

Pirlo for Transfer Watch

Andrea Pirlo to MLS? If you're following all the latest reports, it's tough to say just yet.

First, it was Pirlo who cast doubt on reports linking him to a move to MLS, clarifying that he did not cry after Juventus' 3-1 UEFA Champions League final loss to Barcelona on Saturday because he's leaving the Italian club. Instead, he cried because of how devastating the loss was to him.

"Were my tears a goodbye to Juventus? No, they were for the defeat," the 36-year-old midfielder told Sky Sport Italia. "It is the kind of opportunity that I will rarely get again."

But an ESPN FC report published on Monday continued to fuel recent speculation linking Pirlo to MLS expansion side NYCFC, citing sources in stating that "New York City FC are in pole position to sign Andrea Pirlo."

That was followed up by an article in Australia's Sydney Morning Herald which revealed that "representatives of Sydney FC and Pirlo's agent are set to meet on Tuesday to discuss a potential move to the Harbour City to become the club's new marquee player."

NYCFC have let it be known for some time that they intend to fill their third Designated Player slot, but they've offered no specifics on which player they might be targeting. NYCFC currently has DP forward David Villa on their books, and midfielder Frank Lampard is expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
