United States 3, Netherlands 1 | Toulon Tournament Match Recap

US U-23 national team and San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Fatai Alashe

The US Under-23 national team bounced back on Friday from their loss to France in the Toulon tournament opener, defeating the Netherlands 3-1 to improve to 1-1-0 in the competition.

After the Netherlands opened the scoring in the ninth minute, the US equalized in the 19th minute when Stuttgart's Jerome Kiesewetter smacked a volley to the near post to level the proceedings.

Andi Herzog's team took the lead just five minutes later when Monterrey's Alonso Hernandez finished from six yards out after Jordan Morris - the US's scorer against France - won a header in the box.

The US came out of the break strong, adding their third just two minutes into the second half. Will Packwood, who was under plenty of scrutiny after the US's loss to France, headed one into the back of the net off of a corner.

Herzog made three changes to his starting lineup from Wednesday's loss, adding Hernandez, Colorado Rapids defender Dillon Serna, and San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Fatai Alashe to the starting XI for Real Salt Lake's Boyd Okwuonu, New York Red Bulls II's Dan Metzger and Marc Pelosi.

Herzog also changed up his tactics after Wednesday's disappointment. Instead of startiing in a 4-3-3, Herzog shifted to a 4-4-2 with Morris and Julian Green playing up top.

The US will next face Costa Rica on Sunday before taking on Qatar in their group stage finale next Tuesdsay. The top team in the group will advance to the final and the second-placed team will play in the third-place game, with both of those matches set for June 7.

US Under-23 Starting Lineup:
Cody Cropper; Dillon Serna, Will Packwood, Shane O'Neill, Juan Pablo Oceguada; Fatai Alashe, Benji Joya, Alonso Hernandez, Jerome Kiessewetter; Jordan Morris, Julian Green
