MLS Fantasy Boss: Must-haves and risks to consider before the transfer deadline for Round 13

TRANSFER DEADLINE: Wednesday, 10 pm ET

You may be tired of reading about double game weeks at this point in the season, but those other rounds have got NOTHING on Rounds 13 and 14.

Both rounds have six teams on a DGW, presenting many managers with the opportunity to climb the overall rankings. However, as we’ve seen in past rounds, you’re going to need to stock your roster with players who can survive squad rotation to make the most out of these busy weeks.

With all of that in mind, here are my top 180-minute men:

Goalkeepers

  • Stay the Course: The results may not have gone D.C.’s way over the past few weeks, but that shouldn’t prevent you from starting Bill Hamid ($6.4m) if you have him. Portland will be without injured attacker Diego Valeri, Philly’s form is still questionable, and D.C.’s rotation plans could keep them fresh enough to pull out some shutouts.
  • Great Expectations: If you want to make a trade for a keeper, then Stefan Frei (SEA $5.8m) should be at the top of your list. Besides having two home games in this round, he’s a good long-term pick due the lack of a Round 15 bye and several home games before another DGW in Round 17. Oh, and did I mention he’s the No. 1 overall keeper right now?

Defenders

Familiar Face
: D.C. is expected to
rest several key players
this week as they get ready to tackle back-to-back DGWs, but I expect
Bobby Boswell
($9.3m) to go the distance. He survived the last D.C. shuffle in Round 11, so we know he has the fitness – can he get the shutout bonuses this time around?

MLS Fantasy Boss: Must-haves and risks to consider before the transfer deadline for Round 13 -

  • Differential: If you are looking for a cheaper DGW defender, then consider Jack Jewsbury (POR $5.9m). With D.C. fielding a weaker team, Portland has a good chance at a shutout at home on Wednesday ahead of their match at Colorado this weekend. Jewsbury is also the cheapest option if you are hunting for shutouts and is playing out of position in the midfield.

  • Renaissance Man: If you’ve decided to go all in with Seattle for this round, then Brad Evans ($7.8m) is the defender for you. After playing in a few different positions, center back is turning out to be where Evens’ true fantasy potential lies. His ability to earn defensive bonus points has been surprising and, with just 5.5 percent of managers owning him, he’s possibly the best differential of the round.

  • Midfielders

    Must-Have Man
: I don’t throw this label around lightly, but both form and fixtures point toward
    Clint Dempsey
(SEA $11.8m) as must-have player. On the form side, last week marked the first match that USMNT captain didn’t earn a goal and/or an assist since 2014! As for fixtures, Seattle is the only team that has a DGW with two home games. It’s a recipe for fantasy success.

  • Mile High Gamble: If you’re looking for a player to take a risk on, then go with Dillon Powers (COL $8.0m). On the down side, the Rapids don’t have the easiest two games of the round, playing at Seattle before hosting Portland. On a positive note, they don’t have to travel very far, and Powers is still a go-to player for the Rapids attack.

  • Differential: There are few players with a two-away-game DGW that I’d be willing to pick up, but Javier Morales (RSL $11.1m) is one of them. He returned from injury last week, bringing back the spark that RSL had been missing while he was out and reminding us all of the skill that caused him to be such a great source of offensive points at the start of the season.

  • Forwards

    Fitness Check
: The biggest fantasy news of the week is that
    Obafemi Martins
    (SEA $11.6m) should be

for this DGW. However, “should” does not mean 90-minute fit. He’s a bit of a risky pick, but one that could pay off for the daring manager.

  • SGW Value: If you are going to bring in one SGW player this round, then it needs to be Kei Kamara (CLB $9.0m). Columbus has struggled to score on the road, but Orlando only has one home shutout so far. That fact, plus Kamara’s current form – he has two braces in his last three games – are hard to argue with.

  • Classic Go-To: After missing seven games due to injury, Robbie Keane (LA $11.1m) is back and earned an assist as a second-half sub in his return appearance against Houston last Friday. This is the Keane we’re all used to, and we can expect him to be hungry for goals during LA’s DGW.

  • How many DGW players do you plan on having this week and who do you think is going to go the distance for Round 13? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
