Report: Real Salt Lake reach deal with Guatemalan center back Elias Vasquez, to join club in camp

Elias Vasquez, Guatemala

Real Salt Lake appear to be closing in on Guatemalan national teamer Elias Vasquez, with reports in his home country stating that the 22-year-old center back is already en route to join his new club.

In an interview with a Guatemalan news outlet, Vasquez called the move to RSL “a good opportunity.” An RSL spokesperson confirmed to MLSsoccer.com Vasquez's travel plans from Guatemala to the club's preseason camp in Irvine, California, but didn't indicate whether a contract was in place.

Real Salt Lake head coach Jeff Cassar told the media earlier this preseason that they were working to get a deal done with the Guatemalan international, who is currently with Mexican club Dorados after beginning his professional career in his native country with Comunicaciones. The report also indicated that Vasquez had received an offer from Union de Sante Fe in Argentina.

RSL parted ways with longtime center back Nat Borchers this offseason, while reacquiring veteran Jamison Olave. Should the deal for Vasquez be finalized, he’ll likely be competing for a starting job with Olave, Chris Schuler, Aaron Maund and rookie Phanuel Kavita.
