New York Red Bulls' Tim Cahill scores both goals, one a bicycle kick, as Australia reach Asian Cup semifinals

Tim Cahill celebrates his goal in the 2015 Asian Cup opener

Tim Cahill certainly has a flair for the dramatic.

The New York Red Bulls Designated Player was at it again on Thursday, scoring a fantastic bicycle kick goal (WATCH ABOVE) to give Australia a 49th-minute lead in their 2-0 Asian Cup quarterfinal win over China. Cahill’s bike strike comes barely six months after he scored on an incredible volley for Australia in a World Cup match against Holland.

Cahill also scored Australia’s second goal with a typical header, icing the game for the Socceroos in the 65th minute.

Cahill left after 80 minutes, having done more than his fair share to help the tournament hosts to next Tuesday’s semifinal against the winner of the Japan-United Arab Emirates quarterfinal. Cahill has played in all four of Australia’s matches at the tournament, starting three games and leading his country with three goals.

Cahill is not the only MLS player still alive at the Asian Cup. Columbus Crew SC midfielder Justin Meram and Iraq will meet Iran in the quarterfinals on Friday, with the winner advancing to next Monday’s semifinal against South Korea. Meram – who appeared in all three of Iraq’s group stage games – and Cahill would face off if both Iraq and Australia advance to the Jan. 31 Asian Cup final.
