American Exports: Michael Farfan leaves Cruz Azul, exploring move to MLS or Europe

Michael Farfan with Cruz Azul

Former Philadelphia Union midfielder Michael Farfan has left Liga MX outfit Cruz Azul and is currently looking for a new club, with MLS and a move to Europe both possibilities.

“I have officially left Cruz Azul,” Farfan told MLSsoccer.com in an email. “I am a free agent, so as of now I am weighing my options.”

Farfan confirmed that he is in preliminary talks with MLS and is “exploring a couple of options in Scandinavia, and Switzerland as well.”

The 26-year-old signed for Cruz Azul from MLS in December 2013 alongside Rafa Baca and Jose Villarreal (on loan). Farfan was overlooked in terms of playing time by coach Luis Fernando Tena, although he did score the equalizer in second-half injury time in his one and only appearance in the Liga MX against Pachuca last April.

Farfan remained with Cruz Azul in the Apertura 2014, but wasn’t registered to play.

The San Diego native was selected 23rd overall in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft and became a regular starter for the Union in the 2012 and 2013 MLS seasons, representing the franchise in Major League Soccer's All-Star Game at PPL Park in 2012.
