MLS Power Rankings, Week 33: Did the Portland Timbers vault to the top?

Power Rankings Oct. 14

If the LA Galaxy beat Montreal on Wednesday, there will be six teams sitting on anywhere from 51 to 53 points. If the Impact win, there will be nine teams between 48 and 53 points.

Fifty-three points is first in the Supporters' Shield race and 47 points is out of the playoffs. Nobody in the West has officially locked up a postseason berth. This season is loopy.

Note: Only MLS league games will be reflected in the rankings. The Power Rankings are voted on by the editorial staff at MLSsoccer.com, and all comments are written by Matthew Doyle. All game times are Eastern.

This is the only team in the league that controls its own destiny now. Win out, and they win the Shield – their first significant piece of silverware.
Got one really good look and made it count. Defensively, they're still defending deeper, but – result bias or not – they've played themselves into first place on points with New York. Win at home vs. RSL, and any RBNY slip-up means Portland punch their own ticket.

Last Week: Won vs. Seattle, 1-0

Last Five: D-W-W-D-W

This Week: Saturday vs. Real Salt Lake (10:30 pm, MLS Live)

Had a chance to end San Jose's season and pull within two points of the Shield lead.
Jose Goncalves had perhaps the best game any defender has played in MLS this season.
The tailspin continues, as does the year-long debate: Go 4-5-1 and sacrifice the attack, or go 4-4-2 and sacrifice the defense?
Moving Daigo Kobayashi to the point of the diamond was waaay too long in coming. The 'Caps have looked reborn in the last 180 minutes, and now have to keep that going over the next two games.
