While everyone was busy debating where Clint Dempsey's return to MLS ranked, another related deal reportedly in the works found its way onto the national radar.

In an article breaking down the mechanics behind Dempsey signing with the Seattle Sounders this weekend, Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl also reported Monday that the LA Galaxy are expected to announce soon that center back Omar Gonzalez will occupy the club's third Designated Player spot.

The Galaxy, along with Seattle and Toronto FC according to Wahl, were the clubs reportedly in the running for Dempsey's signature, with the defending MLS Cup champions bowing out because of a looming extension with Gonzalez.

When contacted for comment on Monday, the Galaxy provided MLSsoccer.com with a statement:

“Omar is a very talented player and keeping him in a Galaxy uniform is a priority for us. We will continue to have conversations with him as the season progresses.”

Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan are LA's current Designated Players. Both Gonzalez and Donovan are out of contract at the conclusion of the 2013 season.
