D.C. United announced a few weeks ago that the club and local District brewing company DC Brau have collaborated to brew a very special United beer, the first of its kind in D.C. sports. And the four-time MLS Cup-winning side chose to leave the name up to the fans, via an online nomination process.
Well, we have a winner.
"The Tradition" will begin flowing from the taps of watch-party bar The Pug this Saturday when D.C. United play away to the New England Revolution.
As you would expect, ideas and submissions flowed in furiously from United supporters. United players Chris Pontius, Dejan Jakovic and Ethan White were tasked with sifting through the nominations and ultimately landed on "The Tradition" as the name for the 4.5-percent alcohol by volume (ABV) ale.
For a club that's tied for most MLS Cups won (along with the LA Galaxy), "The Tradition" somehow seems fitting. Among the other quality suggestions were "The Lot 8," "Harkeseweizen," and "The 96 Special."
Also, as a nice touch, star D.C. forward Chris Pontius gave a surprise phone call to the nominator of "The Tradition," Donald Wine II, to congratulate him on a name well-chosen.
Yep, a Wine picking a beer's name.
