American Exports: Dempsey's late winner sets record

Clint Dempsey scores on Liverpool

AMSTERDAM — Three Americans laced them up for some Monday night football overseas, headlined by Sky Sports Man of the Match Clint Dempsey's historic late 1-0 winner against 10-man Liverpool at Craven Cottage.

The US star cleaned up the doorstep spill of a tricky Danny Murphy shot with five minutes remaining to lift Fulham up to 13th in the EPL. It was Dempsey's fourth league goal of the season and his third in five career home games against Liverpool. Most impressive was that it was Dempsey's 37th goal of his Premier League career, pushing him past former Fulham teammate Brian McBride as the top-scoring American in EPL history.

During a hard-nosed second half, the American also hit the crossbar moments before scoring and received a yellow card after a less than friendly tête-à-tête with Reds attacker Craig Bellamy.

Elsewhere, Oguchi Onyewu and Sporting CP advanced to the Portuguese Cup quarterfinals with a 2-0 defeat of visiting Belenenses. The Lions, who have now won 10 of 11 with the US international in defense, move on to host Marítimo on Dec. 21 for a place in the final four.

Finally, in Denmark's SAS Liga, Conor O'Brien came on for the final 15 minutes as strugglers SønderjyskE suffered a 4-0 humbling at home to Odense BK.
