Torres' deft footwork, finish win AT&T Goal of the Week

Roger Torres

Philadelphia’s Roger Torres was able to slip past Colorado’s defense last week at PPL Park and buried a nifty finish to earn the AT&T Goal of the Week award for Week 20.

The 20-year-old midfielder was also able to slip by Landon Donovan for top honors this week, as Torres edged out the LA superstar by a mere 37 votes.

Torres flashed his genius that has Union fans salivating, as he took a cross off his chest in the 93rd minute and used a series of sublime cuts in tight space to find room for a shot. Rapids ‘keeper Matt Pickens was able to get a hand on the Colombian’s left-footed strike, but from six yards out he was left helpless to stop it.

The award is the third for Philadelphia this season and the first for Torres. He joins two-time winner and former Union striker Carlos Ruiz as the only other Philly player to earn the honor this season. In one of the closest Goal of the Week contests ever, less than one percent separated Torres from Donovan, whose outside-of-the-foot breakaway goal paced the Galaxy to a 4-0 win at Vancouver.
