Rapids acquire Burciaga from Wizards

Jose Burciaga Jr. (left) will be a welcome addition to the Rapids lineup.

The Colorado Rapids acquired defender JOSE BURCIAGA JR. in a trade with the Kansas City Wizards today in exchange for a second round pick in the 2009 SuperDraft.

"The addition of Jose Burciaga Jr. to our roster will help us both defend our goal and spring attacks from the back," said head coach Fernando Clavijo.

Burciaga has started 110 of the 115 MLS games he has played in while scoring 13 goals and recording 17 assists from his left back position. In 2006, the Texas native recorded career highs in goals and assists with eight of each and was named to the MLS Best XI that season. This past season Burciaga had four assists to go along with his two goals.

The defender is also active in the community and has founded the Jose Luis Burciaga Foundation designed to encourage young people to stay in school and use athletics as a positive force under difficult circumstances. Burciaga was named as Kansas City's Humanitarian of the Year this past year because of his work with his foundation, his work at the Guadalupe Center in Kansas City and for running a clinic for over 100 kids in New Orleans.
