Houston's Holden living dream

Stuart Holden

Every player feels a little at ease when playing in front the home crowd. This Wednesday, Stuart Holden may have the opportunity to do what very few have ever done: play for his country in the city he grew up in.

"For me to be able to play in Houston in front of friends, coaches, and, most importantly, my family is unbelievable," said Holden. "Any chance you get to represent your country is a huge honor, and the way it worked out being here in Houston at Reliant Stadium against Mexico is just an unbelievable feeling. If it comes true and I get to step on the field, I will enjoy every minute of it."

Just a couple of years ago, Holden came over from England and was convalescing, not knowing if he would ever play in a game like this. Now, thanks to his dedication and hard work, he has not only gotten back in the game, but now also has the possibility of earning his first cap as a member of the United States men's national team.

"It has been kind of surreal; a very fast and incredible journey. I wouldn't have dreamt about being here two years ago, and I am going to do whatever it takes to keep the dream alive," said Holden. "I'll keep on working hard and taking it one step at a time, so wherever it takes me I will be ready to go. I am here now, working hard, trying to get a spot against Mexico. I am just enjoying my time on the field and whatever happens comes from me, because that is what I have been doing my whole career."

The possibility of earning his first cap in his hometown against Mexico, one of the most bitter rivals for the Red, White, and Blue, makes things all the more special for Holden.

"I don't think the word 'friendly' exists between the USA and Mexico. That's why it is such a big spectacle," said Holden. "That's why there is so much media and attention around the game. It's an intense battle, and that's why you can never call it a friendly when these two countries collide."

Holden is not the only member of the Dynamo that is on the U.S. men's national team. "Stu", as his friends and teammates know him, will be joined by fellow Dynamo members Ricardo Clark, Brad Davis and Eddie Robinson. With his three other teammates, Holden should be able to adjust a little more easily.

"To walk in to dinner the first night and see Eddie, Rico and Brad made it a lot easier, because to me it felt like I was at a Dynamo team dinner," said Holden. "To me all the other guys have just welcomed me into the camp, and it has been a really smooth transition so far. I am enjoying every second."
